چکیده

We present a method to derive positions of molecular clouds along the lines of sight from a quantitative comparison between 2.6mm CO emission lines and 18 cm OH absorption lines, and apply it to the central kiloparsecs of the Milky Way. With some simple but justifiable assumptions, we derive a face-on distribution of the CO brightness and corresponding radial velocity in the Galactic centre without any help of kinematical models. The derived face-on distribution of the gas is elongated and inclined so that the Galactic-eastern (positive longitude) side is closer to us. The gas distribution is dominated by a barlike central condensation, whose apparent size is 500 × 200 pc. A ridge feature is seen to stretch from one end of the central condensation, though its elongated morphology might be artificial. The velocity field shows clear signs of noncircular motion in the central condensation. The ‘expanding molecular ring’ feature corresponds to the peripheral region surrounding the central condensation with the Galactic-eastern end being closer to us. These characteristics agree with a picture in which the kinematics of the gas in the central kiloparsec of the Galaxy is under a strong influence of a barred potential. The face-on distribution of the in situ pressure of the molecular gas is derived from the CO multiline analysis. The derived pressure is found to be highest in the central 100 pc. In this region, the gas is accumulating and is forming stars.

Very High Energy γ-ray Observations of the Galactic Centre Region

Recent progress in pushing the sensitivity of the Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique into the 10 mCrab regime has enabled first sensitive observations of the innermost few 100 pc of the Milky Way in Very High Energy (VHE; > 100 GeV) γ-rays. These observations are a valuable tool to understand the acceleration and propagation of energetic particles near the Galactic Centre. Remarkably, besi...

THE XMM-Newton VIEW OF THE GALACTIC CENTRE

In X-rays, the Galactic Centre (GC) Region appears as a complex of diffuse thermal and non-thermal X-ray emission intermixed with a population of luminous discrete sources. Here we present some new findings from the XMM-Newton GC survey, focusing particularly on Sgr A, Sgr A East, the Radio Arc region, and a newly discovered X-ray non-thermal filament.

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations

Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...

3D self-consistent N-body barred models of the Milky Way I. Stellar dynamics

Many 3DN -body barred models of the Galaxy extending beyond the Solar circle are realised by selfconsistent evolution of various bar unstable axisymmetric models. The COBE/DIRBE K-band map, corrected for extinction, is used to constrain the location of the observer in these models, assuming a constant mass-to-light ratio. The resulting view points in the best matching models suggest that the in...

ar X iv : a st ro - p h / 03 11 14 7 v 2 7 N ov 2 00 3 INTEGRAL detection of hard X - ray emission from the Galactic nuclear region 1

This letter presents the first results of an observational campaign to study the Galactic Centre with INTEGRAL. The mosaicked images obtained with the IBIS/ISGRI coded aperture instrument in the energy ranges 20–40 and 40–100 keV, give a yet unseen view of the high-energy sources of this region in hard X-and gamma-rays with an angular resolution of 12 ′ (FWHM). We report on the discovery of a s...
